Sherry Ann Smith, a beloved figure known for her infectious spirit and dedication to nursing, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2026, in her home surrounded by her family in Cardington, Ohio. Born on February 21, 1951, in Marion, Sherry's life was marked by a series of meaningful endeavors and deep connections with those around her.
A proud graduate of Harding High School in Marion, Sherry furthered her education at Marion Technical, where she earned her nursing degree. Her career was as diverse as it was impactful. Beginning as the owner of a physicians weight loss center, she later found her true calling in neonatal nursing, working diligently in labor and delivery. Her compassionate nature and leadership skills led her to serve as the director of nursing at Smith Clinic. She concluded her distinguished career providing private acute care pediatrics, always demonstrating a profound commitment to the health and well-being of her patients.
Sherry was known as the life of the party, a woman of warmth and humor who never met a stranger. Her lively personality made her the center of attention wherever she went. Those closest to her cherished her wit and the joy she brought to any gathering. Beyond her professional life, Sherry had a passion for shopping—often enjoying retail therapy outings with her granddaughter. This granddaughter, who cared for Sherry, held dear the memories of seeing a softer side of her that was rarely revealed to others. Sherry's interests also encompassed reading and continuous self-education, as well as a love for collecting beautiful objects and horseback riding. Sherry especially enjoyed spending time with her sisters Evonda, Teresa, and Mary you could find her on a gulf cart buzzing around the campgrounds any weekend, oversized icy Diet Coke in hand and a mind your business if you asked about the other contents. though most days she could be found at the farm with the grandchildren overseeing some new project.
In a beautiful ceremony on October 25, 1997 Sherry And Dillard smith Jr. began their journey together as husband and wife. the crisp autumn air and the Ohio changing of the colors provided the perfect back drop for their commitment. though sherry has since passed, the memory of that day remains a testament to the love they shared. a chapter of her life that defined a significant part of her life's story.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Dillard Smith Jr., and her loving daughters, Candianne Neff and Brandianne Arthur. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Ashley (Caleb) Taffin, Caty Welch, Chelsea Grams (David), Katie Stone, Zachery (Syntyche) Stone, Alyssa Moore (Aaron), Kevin Miller Jr., Kylie Miller, and Alexis Patton (Michael). Sherry’s family circle was further enriched by eighteen great-grandchildren who adored her.
Sherry was preceded in death by her parents, Estel and Louise Baker, and her brother estel Baker Jr. and her children, Ron Welch Jr and Roxy Welch.
Sherry Ann Smith’s life was a testament to her vibrant personality, her steadfast dedication to her profession, and the deep love she held for her family. She will be remembered not only for her professional accomplishments but also for her generous heart, her spirited nature, and the indelible mark she left on all who knew her.
