On Thursday, December 23, 2021, the Merchant family lost Daniel Ray Merchant. A loving Husband, Father, Son, Brother and Uncle. Daniel “Dan” Merchant battled for his life from complications with Covid-19.
Dan was born and raised in Marion, Ohio. Born July 1, 1965, he was brought up going to Marion City Schools. A man of God and Country, he knew from a young age he wanted to join the military. After graduation, Dan was off to basic training where he would serve in both the United States, 8th Cavalry and later stationed in Germany. Never faltering in his pride for his service and his country, he was an active member of 121st Ohio Volunteer Infantry; An honorary society of individuals who Reenact The Civil War and a Volunteer Firefighter for several years at New Vision Fire and Rescue and Salt Rock Township Fire Department. Benevolent. Always giving of himself to others, where needed. Raising five children, many children extended and holding different and unique relationships with them all. From table top games to history-filled vacations, he always found an opportunity to hone creativity or explore and learn.
Hobbies to include grilling quintessional burgers and dogs in the middle of winter, video games, reenactment trips to various battlefields, listening to traditional Celtic music and his adolescent love for rock, adventures to the shooting range, keeping up the tradition of Boyd’s Bear collecting and buying stock in what would be, grass-stained Nike Monarch’s. A man’s man, through and through.
Dan is survived by his father, James (Gloria) Merchant- Michigan; His children Alex Merchant, Zach Merchant, Anja Merchant, Troy Merchant, and Hunter Merchant; Siblings, Dawn (Tim) Hemmerly, Danette (Todd) Vanvoorhis and several nieces, nephews, and in laws to include, Heather Hook, Donald Hook, Bev (Steve) Hindman, Kelsi (Sean) Baker, Mason Baker, Amelia Baker, DJ Hook, Cody Vanvoorhis, and Emilee Vanvoorhis.
He is preceded by his mother, Alice Merchant and his spouse, Carrie Hindman. His tireless love and devotion to his fighting spirit were evident and a true testament to his strength in his final moments.
A service will take place at Edwards Funeral Service January 16, 2022 at 11am. All donations and contributions can be made to their location.
